Surprising HVAC Market Trends in 2022

What do you think of when you hear the word, “trend”?

Pop culture comes to mind. New recipes, outfits, hairstyles, and home designs. But what about heating and cooling? How is HVAC “trending” in 2022? It might not be what you would initially think.

So, let’s take a look at the three G’s: growth, going green, and getting smarter.

Did you know that there are now more people working in HVAC than ever before?

1. Growth

So, it is no surprise that one of the biggest industry trends in 2022 is growth!

Four years ago, over one million people in the United States were employed by HVAC companies. This is a 5% boost from 2017. But how does this growth impact us now?

To begin, employment statistics for the HVAC industry are higher than ever. And the outlook has forecasted even more growth through 2028. So now is an ideal time to pursue an education in HVAC.

In fact, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers predict HVAC jobs will continue to increase over the next four years.

But what does this mean for you?

Well, if you are reading this article, and currently attending classes at Southern Ohio Tech. Or if you are in the beginning stages of the enrollment process. Your forecast in finding a career after graduation is better than most. In fact, we have a 92% success rate in securing a job upon graduation!

In talking about growth, we also need to recognize the commitment that comes with it. Within the HVAC industry alone, we have a responsibility to keep the environment safe. So, let’s explore another 2022 trend in HVAC… Going Green!

2. Going Green

When you think about “going green,” one idea might immediately come to mind. The need for reducing energy emissions and carbon footprints. But how do we achieve this? The answer lies within one of our industry buzzwords, geothermal.

Specifically, geothermal heat pumps, or ground-source heat pumps. Were you aware that geothermal heat pumps continue to be an environmentally friendly answer for both heating and cooling houses. Because of this, they have become popular with homeowners across the United States.

But this concept isn’t new. Geothermal systems have been in place since the 1940s. And, over time, have become a worthwhile alternative to more traditional HVAC systems.

A quick explanation is that geothermal systems provide both hot and cold, by exchanging heat with the ground. These systems take advantage of the fact that the grounds’ temperature remains constant during certain times of year.

In a nutshell, geothermal heat pumps exchange heat between the earth and the house. During the colder months, a geothermal heat pump system absorbs heat from the earth and transfers it into your home. In the summertime, it works the opposite way. The system pulls the heat from inside the home and transfers it underground. This allows the house to cool down!

One major benefit of working with geothermal heat pumps, is that they use 25% to 50% less electricity than other heating or cooling systems.

And now that Congress has reinstated a tax credit for HVAC. Experts hope for a better understanding regarding what is required in the installation process.

Despite the initial (higher) cost of installing the unit. You will find later down the road, that geothermal heat pumps are a low maintenance, energy-efficient alternative for your home. As of now, Geothermal heat pumps make up roughly 1% of the U.S. HVAC market.

Let’s take a moment and review what we’ve talked about.

3. Getting Smarter

We’ve touched upon growth. As well as how we can work with nature and not against it. But what we haven’t talked about, is how each new trend impacts our future. Either as a consumer, or as a professional. Not to mention how trends in the market affect us in moving forward. Taking all of this into consideration, what we are looking for next, is how HVAC is getting smarter!

A Smart Home Provides the Homeowner with Control.

Let’s start at the beginning.

In 1904 at the St. Louis World’s Fair, society got its first taste of air conditioning. And now, over a century later, HVAC technology continues to change our lives!

Smartphones, smart homes, and smart HVAC systems are in demand. You are now able to control your lights, appliances, and even thermostats through your phone.

Can you imagine being able to have your air conditioner turn on minutes before you get home? All of this means big things for the HVAC community.

For example, smart thermostats and smart air conditioners, allow the user to control temperature with an app or even voice command. For example, if you are away on vacation, your home’s HVAC system will be s mart enough to change the temperature of the house as needed. With the emerging trends in HVAC, this is our new reality.

Simply put, with technology evolving, it is not surprising that HVAC is becoming smarter also. Ultimately, the goal is to save you money by managing your home’s temperature more efficiently and with minimal input from you!

The era of smart HVAC is here.

What if you could predict the future? To know more about what’s coming next in your career… or maybe if you should go back to school and continue your education… or how the economy is going to affect your pocketbook?

The saying that the more things change, the more they stay the same, still holds true. In being observant, you can spot and apply what’s happening in the world around you.

So, if you are reading this. Now is the time to adjust the direction that you are going. Consider working in an industry that allows for not only growth but also the change needed for our children, and our children’s children. In becoming smarter we can and will do exactly that.
